Some of the best educational development for children comes from visual, audio, and kinetic learning experiences. The educational app KidCalc Math Flash Cards & Learning Games (developed Steve Glinberg) brings these three learning methods together in interactive math games for children ages 2 to 10 years old. The application gives children the opportunity to learn math through sight and touch, but also through sound. All of the numbers and icons in the application are voiced-over by the developer’s 4 1/2 year old daughter, letting kids hear numbers and math problems spoken by a child their own age.

KidCalc consists of three different categories: the Calculator, the Counting Puzzle, and the Math Puzzle. The Calculator is a very simple calculator that has the numbers 0 through 10. The function keys are simply plus, minus, equal, and clear. When numbers are entered into the calculator, the voice-over says the number, and various icons appear, allowing kids to hear and count out the numbers they put into the calculator. The Counting Puzzle has a screen of 9 boxes, each with a number and icons. The aim is to select the numbers in the correct order (either ascending or descending). Similarly, the Math Puzzle also has 9 boxes on the screen, but the object is to correctly answer the simple math problems in each box. When the Counting and Math Puzzles are played correctly, the boxes are removed, revealing a photo of some thing fun, like a blueberry or a seashell. The Settings option allows the user to adjust the relative difficulty of each game so you can help develop your child’s math skills.

As an educational app designed for children, what better way to try out KidCalc than to let my 4 year old daughter try these games for herself. I have never really let my daughter use my iPod touch before, but I was eager to give her a chance to play KidCalc. She loves it! She sits and plays this game and counts aloud to herself. She loves numbers and gets excited when she uncovers new photos of interesting things. This app was very easy for my daughter to navigate, even though she cannot read yet.

KidCalc is a great educational app for children. The interface is very easy to navigate, and the child’s voice-over guides children through the math and number games with ease.

KidCalc requires the iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch.
