Crystal Cave Classic Packs in the Puzzles

Price: $3.99    Score: 9/10    By Daniel BischoffCrystal Cave Classic

Crystal Cave Classic is an old school puzzler jam packed with hours of puzzles. It reminds me of some of the old Shockwave titles you could download to your PC. While those were a lot of fun, Crystal Cave Classic offers a lot more puzzles that you can carry around in your pocket, and that’s what makes it quite the bargain.

It’s obvious that developer Rake In Grass put a lot of time and effort into the overall aesthetic too. Crystal Cave Classic offers up some beautiful backgrounds, colorful, clear, recognizable sprites, and great sound design and music. Obviously you might want to plug in your ear buds and listen to some of the tunes you already have on your iPhone, but the sounds are crisp and pop with character.

When you first start Crystal Cave Classic, you’ll most likely begin with it’s robust tutorial which lays the ground work for the puzzle solving you’ll be doing over the course of the game. The object is to collect the jewels scattered around the level while avoiding enemies, and falling objects that could crush the player. Puzzle items vary from simple boulders and breakable blocks, to 8 balls that roll across the whole map before breaking open the door to the treasure.

The controls are mapped transparently on screen and are responsive and tight. Rake In Grass also includes the ability to zoom in and out on the puzzle, and a robust save system.

You can save up to three player profiles, save in the middle of puzzles, and reload a save point at anytime during a puzzle. That means if you were mistakenly crushed by a boulder, you can reload and not have to complete half a puzzle all over again.

The main attraction of Crystal Cave Classic is, of course, the puzzles. Admirably, Rake In Grass has packed over one hundred and fifty puzzles in across several areas. Each area has a different background and the challenge ramps up as you move along. What’s really nice is that just because you get stuck on a puzzle in an early area, like I did, you’re not cut off from the rest of the puzzles. You can just skip the brain buster and try your hand at some more puzzles.

At $3.99 Crystal Cave Classic offers good value with tons of gameplay for puzzle fans.

Crystal Cave Classic is compatible with both the iPhone and iPod Touch.  It requires the iPhone OS 2.1 or later.
