Use Your Handwriting, designed by Gee Whiz Stuff, is a marriage of high and low tech. It provides you all the versatility of having a note pad in your pocket without taking up the extra space. So, throw out the note pad and start having fun creating to do lists.
Unlike other list type products, Use Your Handwriting allows you freedom of expression. Character recognition software allows you to write (cursive or print) or draw items to create lists of things to do. You can keep up to five lists going at a time. Each list is color-coded. You shake the phone to bring up the ribbon that allows you to jump from list to list.
Once you close the app you don’t have to remember how many items you have open. A number appears in the top right hand corner of the app icon. It combines all the items from your multiple lists.
Artsy types will like having the ability to draw. List freaks will like having the ability to create multiple lists based on subject or whatever criteria they like. It is a great app for people who are not adept at typing and want something that is easy to use. For you lefties out there you can set a left-hand usage feature through the settings screen.
There are not a lot of instructions for use of Use Your Handwriting. You click a plus sign to add an item. The screen moves to a horizontal mode and you write or draw your item. If you are writing something that is longer than the screen it recognizes there isn’t any more room and moves over to allow you more space. If you don’t like what you wrote you shake the phone to erase the screen. You can give priority to an item by tapping it. The task will blink to get your attention. You swipe your finger once to check off items but keep them on the list. Swipe a second time to erase. It takes only a few minutes to get the hang of how to write in the app.
The only negative I could think of is that the ink colors might be considered a little girly. Your choices are pink, yellow, green, blue and purple.
I give this app a high score because it is useful, allows great freedom of expression and the general fun factor involved.
Use Your Handwriting requires the iPhone OS 2.0 or later is compatible with both the iPhone and iPod Touch.
