Created by Readdle in conjunction with, the Shakespeare application allows fans and literary enthusiasts to have the words of 40 of Shakespeare’s most renowned plays, as well as his 154 sonnets and six poems, at hand 24/7 with this free application for the iPhone and iTouch.

Alphabetically listed, readers can enjoy the full text of famed plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth and Othello.  By clicking on a play, the reader is then directed to a menu that provides a link to the Dramatis Personae, or list of characters, as well as links to the beginning of each Act or the last viewed page.  One tap and readers are taken straight to their desired page. Shakespeare remembers the exact page you left off with in every piece you read, so you’ll never lose your place.

Shakespeare also provides a great level of control over the appearance of the texts with its Settings manager. Here, readers can choose from seven different font sizes – from Tiny to Largest – as well as choose their own font color and document background, allowing them to personalize according to their preference.  The reader can also choose whether to use double-tap or scroll when sifting through pages.

To enhance the reading experience, the search tool allows you to search throughout the plays for keywords and phrases.  When reading, flipping your iPhone or iTouch upside down will eliminate the menu bars for an authentic page-like look.  Turning your device in a landscape manner not only removes the menu bars, but also maximizes the text area on the screen.

Whether you’re a literary scholar or simply an avid reader, this app is certainly worth the download (especially since it’s free)!

Shakespeare requires iPhone OS 2.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch.
