Picking flowers. Drinking iced tea on the back porch. Making a cartoon pig in a firefighter hat jump over endless ravines.
Sometimes it’s the simple things in life that bring us joy.
I was skeptical when I first opened Pig Rush, an app created by ReignDesign. Nearly twenty minutes later I was completely focused on getting past level six. So yes, I’d have to say this one, for whatever reason, is addictive.
For one thing, very often simple games have simple graphics and simple music, which isn’t too appealing. The graphics for Pig Rush are cute – it’s hard to come up with a not-cute cartoon pig – but really well done. The music is actually some of the best game music I’ve heard in awhile. The sound is great, and the song is driving rather than grating, pushing the pig forward like that Benny Goodman tune pushed Christian Bale in Swing Kids.
Pig Rush is easy to play right from the start. A short tutorial will pop up the first time, but you can skip it if you don’t have the five seconds to spare. The pig starts running automatically. All you have to do is get him to clear the “ravines”, gaps in the ground of various sizes.
Tap high for big jumps and tap low for small jumps – a pretty instinctive thing to do anyway. Occasionally you’ll have the opportunity to grab a firefighter hat out of the air, which protects the pig from the little fires conveniently placed on the edge of the ground near the gaps. It’s possible to clear a lot of the fires without the hat, but it doesn’t hurt to have one. Once you touch a fire with the hat on, the hat disappears.
As long as you don’t get burned or fall into a ravine, the game continues, and piggy passes signs letting you know which level you’re on. With every level you pass, he starts running a bit faster. Rumor has it that past level eight the platforms start moving, adding even more of a challenge. Of course, I’ll be spending a little time trying to find out for myself.
For $0.99, this is a fun game if you want the minutes to fly by.
Pig Rush requires the iPhone OS 2.2 or later and is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch
