I like to cook when I have the time and a good recipe, but sometimes conversions and measurements can be difficult to manage without a little help. If you have a European cook book filled with metric measurements, or if you are trying to cut a large recipe by a third, trying to figure out the measurements can be frustrating. That’s where the Kitchen Calculator Pro comes in. Developed by Forward Leap, LLC, the Kitchen Calculator Pro is just that – a unit conversion calculator specifically tailored for cooking.
Not only does this app contain a basic calculator for manual conversions, but this app also has unit conversion calculators that help you determine how many fluid ounces are in a liter, for example. You can convert from English measurements to metric (teaspoons to centiliters), or English to English measurements (teaspoons to cups). The units can be set to American or UK measurements, which is helpful because cooking volumes are measured slightly different. Temperature conversions are also featured, converting Fahrenheit and Celsius interchangeably.
By far the best feature of Kitchen Calculator Pro is the weight-to-volume conversion for various foods. This takes a little practice at first, but the help section has instructions for finding the weight-to-volume conversions for a preloaded database of 188 common cooking ingredients, from apples to yogurt. Here is an example of how this would work in a recipe: a traditional Pound Cake recipe is comprised of 1 pound each flour, sugar, eggs, and butter. Finding out how many cups is in a pound of flour can be difficult if you don’t own a good food scale. And different kinds of flour have different masses; for instance, 1 pound all-purpose wheat flour will measure differently than 1 pound whole grain rye flour. According to the weight-to-volume conversion in the Kitchen Calculator Pro, 1 pound of all-purpose flour is equal to 3 2/3 cups, 1 pound of butter is 2 cups, and so forth. So, you can make your traditional pound cake (without the headache) and eat it too!
There is plenty of science in this application that is simplified for those who prefer not to do their own math. The database of ingredients has information based on information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, so it is accurate. If the ingredient you are looking for is not found in the database, you can add in your own ingredients and weight/volume information for future reference. The Kitchen Calculator Pro is an excellent tool for cooks of any skill level.
Note: The measurements that are supported in this app are as follows: teaspoon, tablespoon, cup, pint, gallon, liter, centiliter, milliliter, fluid ounce, quart, drop, jigger, gill, dash, pinch, pounds, ounces, grams, kilograms, Fahrenheit, and Celsius.
Kitchen Calculator Pro requires iPhone OS 2.2 or later and is compatible with both iPhone and iPod Touch.
