For those who want their Solitaire with a little adrenaline boost, this is the game to download. Card Drop, an app brought to you by Kuyi Mobile, is the kind of game you figure out in seconds but play obsessively for hours.
When you start the app for the first time, an optional tutorial pops up that gives you quick, easy-to-follow instructions on the basics of the game. Five random cards are lined up at the bottom of the screen, and more cards begin to drop down from the top in four columns. The point is to create stacks as they’re falling, either in ascending or descending order. If a 4 card is falling and there is a 5 card waiting at the bottom, just drag the 5 card up and it sticks to the falling card. A new random card will replace the 5 card in the row at the bottom.
More points are given for combos; stacks of three cards or more. It’s possible to reverse the order of one stack. For example, stack a 9 card with an 8 card, a 7 card, then another 8 card. The cards fall at different speeds, adding to the challenge. If a card is falling and you don’t see a match, simply tap the card and it speeds to the bottom and out of sight, so a new card can begin falling in its place. Create as many stacks as possible before the timer runs down!
The Achievements menu keeps track of your scores and other accomplishments, like “Combo Maniac”, for those who get ten 10x combos, or “Score Addict” for players who get 30,000 points in one game. For a little healthy competition, you get easily sync your stats online and see how you rank with other players. I felt pretty pleased with my first score, but I ranked 1447! The high scores are pretty impressive.
I think the trick to this game is quickly figuring out which falling cards can’t be stacked and sending them down quickly so that a new one appears. During my first game, I kept up with what was falling and created a decent amount of stacks, but I did waste a lot of time waiting for unused cards to fall. Knowing how addictive Card Drop is, I’m sure my skills (and score) will improve soon! At $0.99, this is a great game for anyone looking for more excuses for procrastination.
Card Drop requires iPhone OS 2.2.1 or later and is compatible with both iPhone and iPod Touch.
