Styx is an Addictive Arcade-Puzzler

Price: $2.99    Score: 8/10    By Shaun CampbellStyx

Styx is a challenging and addictive new arcade-style puzzle game from developer EMV Software. More than just another Bejeweled clone, Styx offers original gameplay and features an intuitive and novel control system that is incredibly easy to pick-up and play.

There are two main game modes in Styx – Paths and Time trial. Paths features an infinite number of levels with increasing difficulty and time trial is a traditional race against the clock to get as many points as you can. As you go up in levels, new tile-types are added and it gets harder and harder to create combinations. You accumulate points by eliminating colored tiles – the more you can eliminate in one shot, the higher your score.

The controls in Styx are dead easy – simply drag your finger to select tiles of the same color or same type. You can move in either the horizontal, vertical or diagonal direction, but you have to select a minimum of two tiles for your move to count. You can create some pretty amazing chains and combos that wind around the game board – especially if you can take advantage of the several power-ups available in the game. 2x and 4x multipliers increase your score for a limited amount of time while bombs and color-swap tiles give you the ability to record some great scores.

There are 6 different tile sets to choose from in Styx, 3 difficulty levels, 29 medals to unlock as well as local and online highscores lists and the ability to set up multiple player profiles.

Bottom Line: Styx is a fun, addictive puzzle game with solid production values and a lot of polish.

Styx requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with both the iPhone & iPod Touch.
