We all know the native iPhone camera isn’t the best. Both in terms of raw shooting power and camera features, the iPhone is lacking. While the hardware has to be accepted for what it is, Camera Genius from developers CodeGoo extends the functionality of the iPhone camera beyond just the standard point-and-shoot. With a host of features to improve your photos, Camera Genius gives you all the tools you need – all built into the one app.
Firing up Camera Genius turns “on” your iPhone’s camera and presents you with an interface very similar to that of the native camera app. The difference you’ll note is in the lower navigation pane – tapping on the left-most icon allows you to access the six following photo options:
- Sound Capture
- Anti Shake
- Big Button
Zoom would be a great addition to the camera if the “zoom” didn’t come at the cost of image quality. Due to the iPhone’s lack of an optical lens, the image can only be digitally enlarged. Camera Genius is not too blame here though – the camera does not have sufficient resolution to handle even moderate zoom levels without encountering heavy pixelation.
Sound Capture allows you to make a sound to take a picture. It’s an interesting feature that takes advantage of the iPhone’s microphone, and gives you the ability to take a photo without having to touch the screen.
Anti Shake utilizes the accelerometer to prevent you from taking blurry pictures. Camera Genius only takes a photo once your hands are steady.
Big Button turns the entire iPhone screen into a “take a photo” button. Tapping anywhere on the screen will trigger the camera – a great feature. The button in the native camera app has always been painfully small, something you probably would’ve noticed if you’ve ever tried taking a photo of yourself.
Guides are horizontal and vertical lines that assist in framing and positioning your subject, allowing you to utilize the “rule of thirds” to satisfy your artist within.
Timer gives you a standard 10 second countdown, with an audible “beep” each second.
Camera Genius also comes with a handy camera manual that is a great basic resource for the novice photographer. There are notes and tips on topics such as lighting, focal point, perspective and portraits as well as example photos in each.
Camera Genius is currently priced at $0.99 and offers a real and useful alternative to the standard iPhone camera app.
Camera Genius requires the iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is not compatible with the iPod Touch.
