Zynga Live Poker – The Best iPhone Poker App?

If you are one of the millions of people who have jumped on the online poker bandwagon in the last few years, you have probably already (unsuccessfully) looked around for an iPhone app that lets you play Texas Hold’em online. Unfortunately – due to Apple’s stance on online gambling – there are no official poker clients in the app store that allow for real-money poker.

Still, even Apple knows the value of a good poker app for the iPhone, as is clearly demonstrated by Apple’s in-house developed “Texas Hold’em” app. While this poker app looks great and implements the iPhone’s UI admirably, it is also fairly limited. It bears little resemblance to the “real” online poker experience – although it’s possible to play against some of your friends over Wi-Fi.

If you want a poker app where you get to play with thousands of other players online, have a look at “Live Poker” by Zynga instead; it offers Facebook integration and an interface that closely resembles the ones you’ll find in regular online poker rooms. Of course, there is no option to play for real money or play in Titan Poker freerolls, but you do get to play in a very online poker-like environment for pure entertainment purposes, which might be good enough. With enough practice you could even consider entering the 2010 World Series of Poker.

As with all free poker games where no money is involved, there is no real challenge to be found in Live Poker – you get a reasonably sized stack to start with, plus you may add more every time you play. But that’s the nature of play-money poker – with nothing to lose; you usually don’t play good poker. This is fine if you’re just looking for entertainment, but don’t think that you’ll do just as well in real poker even if you make millions with Zynga Live Poker.

Admittedly, there are no new or unique special features in Zynga’s Live Poker, but it builds on the tried and tested, user-friendly Texas Holdem recipe that you find online. Zynga has done a nice job in adapting this experience to the iPhone. If you have played any poker game before, you will be able to navigate Live Poker’s interface with ease. A bell will tell you when it’s your turn to act, and you get to chat with the other players at the table, or buy them a virtual drink to celebrate your big wins.
In all, Zynga Live Poker is definitely one of the best ways to play poker on the iPhone while we wait for a real-money poker client to come along, which may unfortunately never happen.

“With enough practice you could even consider entering the 2010 World Series of Poker.”

Zynga Live Poker requires the iPhone 2.0 software update and is compatible with both the iPhone & iPod Touch.

You’re right, it is the best Iphone app. I use it to go to sleep every day ;) Most Iphone apps, I barely use at all!

  2. Bummed User says:

If you played this app you’d realize it’s severely flawed. First, it’s buggy:
–It frequently complains of having insufficient network bandwidth, on a full T1 with full strength wireless. If not for the avatars, it should only have to transfer bytes, if not bits, to represent a hand. And the avatars are tiny.
–Twice I’ve lost hands, and once I’ve won a hand, when the winning hands were not the best on the table.
–A half-dozen times it’s folded on me contrary to my selected action, and NOT when the elapsed timer runs out. (The timer is great. Even with the timer it’s torturous waiting for some players to decide what to do. I can’t imagine playing without the timer.)
–dealt cards display in odd ways, including over your own cards, over the chat window, etc.
–and the odds seem outrageous. In 500 hands, I’ve seen 9 (NINE!) 4 of a kind hands, and 4 straight flushes (for example). The odds of a straight flush in 7 cards are approximately 0.0311% (1 in 3110). I have no reason, other than the staggering number of certain hands, to believe the game is fixed, but it’s the hottest game I’ve ever seen.
–the social bloodsucking is also a pain. You are constantly prompted to buy chips for cash (ha!), give your email address, give your SMS address, join in Facebook, etc., etc. You’re also confronted with an ad for another Zynga game every single time you fold. EVERY FOLD. (Dear Zynga, I don’t give a toss about vampires.) It’s hard to get too worked up over this, because it’s a free game, but if there’s an inexpensive paid version that cuts out all that fudge, you’re better off with that.

I haven’t looked for another game.

  3. Me says:

um if i buy more than one zynga will i get the chips too?

  4. steve says:

I played this app way too much but got feed up with it and just dumped my 1 mill my chips stack today because I got tired of people playing crap hands and losing constantly to crazy hands like 4 of a kinds and crazy runner runner straights and full houses. I have played poker for many many years and have never hit a straight flush. Of course on wonderful Zynga poker, I hit one and many other crazy hands. I got back to back pocket Aces last night?? I agree that it must be set up. Also the big problem is that you can play with a low stack even when you have 1 billion chips. What people do is come in with a small stacks, win a couple of nice hands and then deposit the winnings to reserve They then come right back with the small stack they started with to minimize their looses. No matter what you do, 2-4 will always call your all in..chips are traded and bought. The top guy has some billion range chip stack. Keep playing this and you will loose big time at your home games kids…there is 0% skill here..

  5. steve says:

I meant a I hit a royal staight flush??? What are the odds again?

  6. Steve says:

I agree with steve (posted 8/5/09). I’ve played for 2 weeks daily and I’m up to 700K starting with 5k plus 500 a day ave chips I get for signing on. Like the other poster said too many runner runners (which I’ve taken advantage of). One night I only lost two hands out of 50+ hands. When I mucked I’ve would’ve won most of those! The app loves me!? Nice to chat with some people, but not real poker. Not had a problem with the app itself crashing or using 3G network on my iPhone 3G. Tournament play is a little better, but still way too many good flops and hands. In the real world I’ve seen one straight flush in 5 years, and not too many 4 of kinds.

  7. Linda Price says:

I purchased the 100k and 300k and never have received the 2,000 chips per day.

  8. maggie says:

I made an account on my ipod before facebook…..I just wanted to know if you could somehow use the account from the ipod on facebook. I’ve got 100k+ chips I don’t wanna waste.

  9. Peter says:

Zynga is full of bugs. Irritating when you are kicked out off a 25,000$ tournement due to “bad connection” messages. 2 out of 3 tournements requires a restart. No other online app. generates this message.
I have removed it from my iPhone and will wait till Zynga cures the bugs. The idea is good, poker is a hype so there is a need for app. like this.

  10. Donald says:

i have played for over a year on online accounts and received an ipod touch for christmas and would like to play on there, so i downloaded the app on itunes and synced it to my ipod but for some reason it keeps showing error, if anyone could provide helpful info it would be appreciated

  11. Kevin says:

can someone explain to me why you would ever “buy” chips on here for REAL money (via paypal)…I don’t get that..what is the advantage of that..you can get the chips for free? Also, there has been tons of complaints about people’s chips getting “stolen” or “hacked” from their accounts..what would be the reason someone would want to steal your fake money chips..i don’t get that…..

  12. dallascowboy says:

THIS IS A CRAPY GAME ON IPHONE. I HAVE PLAYED THIS GAME, EVERY DAY AND ALL DAY LONG LIKE I’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…..IF YOU HAVE THE GAME GET READY FOR SOME ODD FRUSTRATION…IF YOU ARE A BEIGGINER BETTER LOOK FOR SOMETHING ELSE/

  14. eric says:

aside from the already mentioned issues…I find it extremely annoying with the “buy” options…like you can ‘buy’ everyone at the table a drink, cigar, or a flower etc … or even tissues, which seems to be the favorite when someone loses a hand.

  15. Joe says:

This is bullshit.you hAve someone hack 8.7million of chips that you bust your ass for, then zynga acts like they will do something about then they don’t a mounth later.tottal bullshit.it’s a scam for they could sell chips, fuck that!!!!!!

  16. Brian says:

    Hi, Zynga,

Why at itunes at Malaysia cannot download the software for Zynga Poker???

  17. Karla says:

I am livid! I have played this game for six months and had my chips built up..only to have some young kid hack my iphone on Zynga. The hacker swapped places with me. I had his hand and name and he had mine. I could not control his but could see his cards. He had complete control over my zynga account and stole ALL of my chips! WTF! How did he do this?

  18. Claire says:

Hi guys I came here to see If I could find out why my zynga poker is playing up on my iPhone. I keep getting booted out of the app (usually just as I get a decent hand). And just now I cant log in at all. But…

    @Karla ( august 24th). I logged into
Poker yesterday and went to a 500-1k table and clicked on an empty seat at the top left. Usually the app would place me at the middle bottom but on this occasion it left me at the top left position with no cards there. Instead I could see the cards of the player already in the bottom middle
Seat. Ithought it was a delay and clicked “call” when prompted. It didnt call 1k, but instead said “all in”. (That Hand didn’t win) I realised when the turn came to me that I couldn’t play on my own name and had taken the girls
    Turn. Weird huh?
But stranger was when I clicked out of that room back to home poker screen, my chip count said 35k (instead of the 2+ mil I had in the first place) I couldn’t get back into a high table only the low ones that a 35k chip count will allow.
I rebooted my phone, went back into the app, and everything was back to normal (2mil chip count).
I didn’t think anything of it until I saw ur post and now I think these hackers must have spotted a glitch in the app where they can jump onto your account and play or take ur chips?
Sorry for the long winded post :)

  19. I have had a lot of patience with zynga and their poker app. I have lost hundreds of thousand chips just because the app decides to lag when I’m in hands. I play poker with my dad and brother who also get booted often and hardly play anymore because of that. If there is a software programmer who could make a similar but reliable app I would easily pay $10 on iTunes. Zynga poker is a scam. If you want a bad poker experience try zynga. When this app does function its really not bad.
You can only play via facebook.

  20. digitz says:

On Iphone 3G this app is WAY TOO SLOW. It bounces you out of a table randomly and disconnects frequently. Extremely annoying when you have money on the table!

  21. CheAlpha says:

This app can bring you to the biggest poker site but it is poorly programmed and the last version is even more bugged than the previous one:

1.crash on start with iPhone4, a reboot is always needed.
    2. Settings and Tables selection are not remembered.
    3. You cannot choose your seat, it makes you believe you can but the software just chooses itself.
    4. The game freezes even with strong wifi signal from Time to time… I had experienced this in the middle of a hand in high stakes.. Not cool!
    5. The action is slow.
    6. The chat is super slow and is dangerous to use in a middle of a hand… U CAN be disconnected from the table.
    7. No 5 handed tables bigger than 100/200 available to you (avoid 9 handed games, they are too slow!)
    8. No nickname option, your Facebook name is automatically used.
    9. You dont see opponents cards even when they pay your raise on the river and they win, always the case when you face two or more opponents. Thats pretty bad for a poker game if you ask me.
    10. I strongly encourage the programmers to rewrite this app from scratch because it not stand against competition apps nowadays. The others are far more better than this one and more intelligent.

    Voilà

    Totally Agree.

  23. YL says:

Does anyone know if we need to pay with real money to play in a tournament?
I was playing live poker on my ipod and i chose tournaments where it says “Buy-in& Fee”
    Buy-In: $20
    Fee:5.
I accidentally touched the “play now” and it sent me to a table with $1000. Does that mean I have to pay with real money!?!? I tried to look it up in the terms & policy but I cant find any information about it!
    Thanks in advance!

  24. Darren says:

  27. Marc says:

I tried Zynga caused I was tired of playing on the rigged pokerist (scammers) site. It took me 24 tries to win my first hand, after entering into the 3 table I tried 15 times with a average of 7 players. I finally left the game and site cause one guy won 6 of those 15 games I couldn’t win one game. So my impression is the game is rigged!

  33. Stscey Downing says:

I have Parkinson’s Disease and have to take Dopamine pills. At times this causes me to be a bit obsessive compulsive and one of my outlets is gambling. This used to be dangerous, as I could spend thousands of dollars in a matter of minutes, I just go into a trance of sorts and dont care about anything at all. My Ipad has allowed me to go online and play various slots and poker without losing money, it is free feeding of the monster in a way. I have downloaded a lot of the apps for casino games and I like Zynga poker because it is graphically pleasing, you can easily see your cards and bank roll and the action buttons are easily accessible. I dont know if it is rigged, I believed so at one point but now I think it is just that people play a bit recklessly when they arent using real money. It isnt just the so called “bingo” players who take chances and go all in,they are a big problem but also there are players with big bank rolls who sit at tables with people with smaller bank rolls and bully them into submission or folding. In real poker this is called bluffing but the element of the poker face is gone and people just wouldnt do that if real money was at stake. I guess with real money poker online you lose the poker face as well, but you probably play your hand and can trust that most people will as well. I have lost a lot of chips on Zynga and I cant seem to win. They give a bunch of free chips away if you research it you can get tons of things. On their facebook page, you can get chips and round skips in the tournament. Their chips are reasonably priced, you can get like 800.000 for 99 cents and if you play the lower buy in tables, that can last you pretty much forever. The problem is that you have to go to the computer to claim or win chips, they transfer to the I pad, but if you select them on facebook with your Ipad, they become unavailable but you dont get them. They need to fix that. All in all I would agree with you that Zynga is the best app for Texas Holdem, but I will get back to you on that.

  34. Peter4321 says:

I have played this game on Pokerist.com using my iPad for about six months and Android cell phone for about a month. Interface with iPad has worked excellent; cell phone interface is buggy.

However, I find playing this game very frustrating because if you watch how flops and hands come up – as I have thousands of them, no-way the cards are being dealt at random as will happen in a live game. There are just two many good hands where you would think now-way any one on this five person table can beat this and some one always surprises you. Its like the only guy having fun is the programmer watching people lose like crazy. Two many straights – always middle cards on the table, top and bottom in players hands so they can destroy each other.

Another thing seems to be that the cards are dealt according to your ID, when you are on a losing streak no matter what table or seat you go to you lose for days or win for days.

I have gone from 50M to 1.5B chips in two weeks playing 500K/1M table or smaller; have lost the same in the next two weeks.

Have not been having any luck this week with three of a kind on a flop, or pockets pairs of Kings or queens, even with straits when some one pulls out something better. Looks like at this time my ID has been put on the loser list and nothing I can do until the flag to take me off this list is triggered.

    Totally rigged!!!!

  35. Troy says:

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH Peter4321. Lost 8.5 bil chips at every table at every hand.

  36. Pat says:

I also agree about this being rigged.

I have days where I just simply can’t lose and then suddenly I am getting beat on hands like a full house Queens over Jacks.

I also try to NEVER use the chat feature since this seems to add to what ever problem this app has with iPhones. When I am playing this game, I always have to turn my phone off and then back on after a couple of tournaments or it lags so bad that I can’t play at all.

Restarting my phone ALWAYS fixes it. Sounds to me like a memory leak in the application. Are you paying attention developers? FIX IT NOW!!!

  37. ‘Sparkling Poker’, which is about to launch in the Apple app store, is a unique concept using bluetooth to connect up to five players. The game is shown on an iPad, while players all hold their iPhones or iPods instead of cards. So this is not an online game, you just play with any regular group of people, but you use your devices instead to play. It’s free to play, you only pay if you happen to run out of chips and still wish to continue..
