Counting calories has never been an exciting activity. It is repetitive, boring & mundane – but it works. Weight loss, as we all know, is all about calories in vs calories out. Eat less calories than your body needs, and you lose weight…simple right?
Of course, first you have to know how many calories you actually need each day, and how many you are really consuming. And what about exercise?
Lose It! from developer FitNow, takes the hard work out of calorie counting and enables you to easily track your energy consumption and expenditure wherever you go. Lose It! allows you to create a custom profile, with daily calorie requirements calculated on your weight, height, gender and age. Your requirements can be adjusted depending on your weight loss goals.
Enter food & portion size easily via a searchable database, including hundreds of brand-name products. Lose It! also has nutrient information built-in to each food. You have the option to track daily fat (+saturated fat), protein, cholesterol, carbohydrates & fiber intake.
With Lose it! you can add exercise information from a comprehensive list of activities including v1.1 additions – elliptical, stairmaster, yoga & pilates. Calories burned in exercise are automatically subtracted from your daily total.
Lose it! also allows you to graph your weight loss progress over time and monitor your daily and weekly calorie intake. At at glance, you can see just how many calories you’re allowed for the rest of the day.
Lose it! is a straightforward and easy to use app, with a clean and attractive user interface. There’s a lot of utitlity here for everyone (not just those concerned with weight loss). And at this price, it’s no wonder that Lose it! is currently the number one most downloaded Health & Fitness application for the iPhone.

5lbs the 1st week. By far the my favorite app. For someone like me, diets have not worked so well, this technology is simply the best thing I have ever used, and I have been on all the system diets in the past.
I have high hopes for this, with my phone I find it simple to track things, very user friendly, and at the end of the day I dont snack anymore I excersise! I love this app!

I’ve lost 12 pounds in the month since I uploaded this. It works well because while I almost never have a pad and paper handy, I almost always have my ipod touch with me – so I use it every single time I eat. No, it doesn’t come loaded with every single food in the universe, but you can enter in any food you’d like as long as you’ve got the basic nutrition information available (online or on the label). Plus, the thing is free, so try it for two weeks and see what happens. The goal tracker is also working for me, so I can see in a line graph when I tend to lose weight and when I gain it to help me with to break bad eating patterns on those pesky weekends.

On top of the dieting I’ve been exercising much more than usual so of course that’s had an effect. Overall I like the foods/meals in this diet plan.

I really like this app and all it’s features. I just wish it would work the other way around. I’m currently trying to gain weight and the app doesn’t support that. I guess that’s why it’s called Lose it!
Anyway, the other apps I’ve looked at for weight gain are terrible compared to this one.
Any thoughts on making it accept weight gain goals as well?

I downloaded this app a while ago and went through trial and error while testing it along with a few others. This was my favorite and I am sticking to this one. It’s simple, user friendly, nice to look at, it has a lot of information already programmed in. I only have a few suggestions:
1) the ability to add beverages as their own section of the day.
2) a breakdown of calories, fat, sugar (whatever metric the user has chosen) by meal time group and not just by day. This can help to see where some calories can be cut.
3)ability to add pictures to the food entries the user creates.
4)more name brand & restaurant menu food items.
Other than that, I love it.

I have never kept a food journal until now. It’s easy because it’s on my phone & I like most people I always have my phone with me. If I could only have 1 app…this is the 1 I’d choose. Thank you to the creators!

Oh,can’t get it in Australia!!! :(
August 26th, 2009 at 12:56 am
yeah it is a shame Lara. unfortunately it’s only available in the US app store!
September 3rd, 2009 at 3:18 pm
hey Shaun, this app looks great, but like Lara I’m in Australia too…any idea when/if we’ll be able to get ahold of this?? if not, are there any similar ones that we can use?!
September 3rd, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Jarryd – I don’t think they have plans to release the app to the Australian app store, which is a real shame. The only work around that I can see is to get yourself a US iTunes account – technically I probably shouldn’t endorse it, but it’s not hard to do – just check google.

To Dave in UK…it is a free app so it is not a problem to get a Canadian or US account at itunes and download. google that if you aren’t sure how to do it.

Joining the chorus of those who have found that this app is really effective. I’ve lost 11 pounds since I started using it on January 15. I love the calorie budget and the built-in plans, but what I love most is that it auto-calculates how long it will take you to achieve your goal weight. Really helps keep you on track when you realise that if you stick with it, by July 05, 2009, you really COULD be in a bikini without shame.
